There used to be a fabulous restaurant in Norfolk VA called *The Dumbwaiter* --he would intentionally misspell his menu (le sigh, it is now in the great restaurant in the sky)--in which the (and this is important to get the feel for the place) very gay, Mississippi-born, kitsch-loving proprietor whose name is also Sid, would have "Damn Dollar Martinis" every night for happy hour. It was steps away from where we worked, so after a long day, we'd all take our meager earnings and spend very little to get very drunk. Those were good times. Glad you're having a blissful time.

I think it may have been Churchill who said that the only way to obtain the proper proportion in a martini is to let a ray of light shine through the vermouth bottle onto the gin. Enjoy, but stir rather than shake (as you'll bruise the gin).

Sighhh, I could talk about martinis forever, but my university office frowns on having alcohol on campus. Back to it.
