My claim to fame is having at one time or another either owned or played (and sometimes when the planets were aligned just right, owned AND played AT the same time) almost every instrument you can think of, from piano to violin to cello to guitar to mandolin to banjo to drums to handbells to marimba (probably a couple of others I've forgotten too)...but I never stuck to one long enough to get good at it. I took piano lessons for years from an old lady in my neighborhood who was half blind and chain-smoked Salems and had a goldfish in a little bowl that was probably as old as she was. This year for christmas my two presents to myself were a new motorcycle and a new cello, because I always liked the sound of it. I'm taking lessons where the combined age of the other four students is less than 30, and they're kicking my ass at the moment, but I'm having fun...just gotta figure out a way to strap the cello to the bike and I'll be happy.

Be grateful that your viola dreams were shattered early.

You would have grown up to find out that violists are the butt of every other orchestral joke.

mostly I remember playing piano and taking lessons from an prehistoric lady who scared me to nightmares. Her name was Mrs. Stigmier, even her name sends knuckle pain and tiresome metranome rhythm thru my body, argh! Suppose I played ok because I'z alwayz havin' to be at these recitals where the only memories I hold on to was the fact that I would sneak candy into the events. hyperactive kid and white patton shoes and dresses do not mix.

I did have a brief relationship with bell choir in the United Methodist Church. Think I'z axed because of my utter fondness with ringing the tiny bells for my own noisy pleasure, sounding more like a scary traffic jam than the clanging of a Poe poem! eh...if I ever have to recite that damn poem again...

The most embarassing stint I had with music education came from my own need to fit in. 4th grade E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y palyed in band and I
W-A-N-T-E-D to BAAADDD. All instruments were taken as I started late, so my parents ended up renting me the only instrument left. I'd like to say it was the stand-up bass and that my serious training in jazz comp. started there...the reality being a silly no-talent kid trying to play an old BOX CELLO. ugh. And this was no Bear Jamboreee, I tell ya. I think we have enough musician near-misses to start an angst orchestra. Let me know! :)
